Unison Prayer

Holy and loving God,

we come to you

both as sheep

and shepherds.

We yearn for your care,

your loving touch.

But we also yearn to be useful--

to care for those who are hurting,

and to ease the burden

of those who are troubled

and plagued by sorrow.

Strengthen our resolve,

and grant us the courage

to hear your call,

receive your care,

and share your love

with a world in need. Amen.

*Closing Hymn....................BEECHER 8.7.8.7 D (Love Divine, All Loves Excelling)

Peter Said, I'm Going Fishing

Peter said, "I'm going fishing," so his friends went out with him.
Through the night, they labored, watching,

Hauling empty nets back in.
In the grey of early morning, Jesus, you came walking by.
From the beach you called a greeting, "Cast out on the other side!"

Soon their nets were filled to brimming; Someone cried, "It is the Lord!"
Jumping in, he started swimming; Christ, you met him on the shore.
Guiding them to better waters, Eating fish, and sharing bread-
You showed Peter and the others: You were risen from the dead!

Risen Christ, you send us fishing! God's great sea is everywhere.
You have guided us in mission, You have given love to share.
Through the years, our church has heard you,

We have answered your great call:

"Cast you nets where I have told you.

Bring my word of love to all!"

Lord, be with our congregation; By your spirit, send us forth!
May we care for your creation; May we work for peace on earth.
In our worship, in our giving, In our serving those in need,
May we know, Lord; you are living, Guiding us in ministry.

*Blessing and Commissioning

One:..........Find Jesus unexpectedly!

All:..........We find him at the moment of greatest aloneness.

One:..........Find Jesus joyfully!

All:..........We find him in the midst of a family celebration.

One:..........Find Jesus gratefully!

All:..........We will find him when calm comes in the midst of crisis.

One:..........Find Jesus in faith community!

All:..........We find him as we work with others for justice and freedom.

One:..........Find Jesus eternally!

All:..........We will find him, when our time merges with God’s time. Amen.

PRAYER HYMN WITH A RESPONSIVE PRAYER OF THE PEOPLE

All Singing:Kum ba yah, my Lord, Kum ba yah (Three times)....................#494

All Singing:..........Kum ba yah, my Lord, Kum ba yah (Three times)

Oh, Lord, kum ba yah!

Gracious and loving God, you have revealed yourself through the compassion and love of your Son Jesus, and you have called us to follow his example as the way, the truth, and the life; incline your ear to us as we pray: Make your face to shine upon your servants and in your loving-kindness, save us.

All:..........Someone’s praying Lord, come by here.

God of unending mercy we pray for all who are battered in body or spirit, for children who go to bed hungry, for all who are imprisoned by walls or worries, for all who are despondent because they feel unloved. Give us the strength of compassion that we might not shield our eyes and hearts from their pain but seek to understand and heal. Bless us with courage and arm us with hope, that we may help lessen the suffering of our world.

All:..........Someone’s praying Lord, come by here.

God of our tender care, we join the spoken and silent prayers that come to you from throughout the earth - from sanctuaries and street corners, from battle lines and prison cells, from hospital rooms and festive tables. We pray with thanks, with sorrow, with urgency. Just now, O God, we pray for . . .

All:..........Someone’s singing, Lord, come by here

God of overflowing joy, we rejoice with sunset watchers, sand dune sleepers, playing children, new parents, old friends and all in whom your life-giving Spirit wells up and overflows. Help us to feel it surging with us; enable us to shower it upon the world! For your steadfast love to those who have come before, your continual goodness to us and your promised care for those who are yet to come we give you thanks, O God! Hear this our common prayer, Our Father . . .

All Singing:..........Come by here, my Lord, come by here (3 times)

Oh, Lord, kum ba yah!

*BLESSING AND BENEDICTION

One:..........Christ asks if we love him? If we say yes, he says; “Then care for one another.” This is our opportunity to make a difference, to live lovingly on the frontiers of Christ’s bright new world.

All:..........We cannot promise to do it perfectly, but we can give it a go, relying on Christ’s abundant wisdom to take our small love, and fit it into a larger pattern of good for all creation.

One:..........As a gift from the living God in Christ Jesus, grace mercy and peace will be yours, today and always.

All:..........Amen!
