*Call to Celebration

One:..........We each have many gifts to offer in service to God.

All:..........Some will be teachers; others preachers; some will be capable leaders, others will be skillful workers; some will be those who have visions of all possibilities; others will find ways to make those visions a reality; some will develop ministries of peace and justice; others will seek to change unjust systems.

One:..........Each person here has been blessed by God.

All:..........Lord, help us to use those blessings to help others. Amen.

Unison Prayer

Lord, in this season of Epiphany, as we think about the revealing of Jesus, we pray that you would open our eyes to see him more clearly. Help us understand fully the glories of Jesus’ life and his love for us. We pray, too, that you would open our hearts to understand that you have made us Christ’s body, that you have brought us together as your church to represent Jesus to those around us. Help us know that we need one another. Illumine our church, Lord. Bring us to dependence on you and dependence on one another. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.

Prayer of the People

*Doxology #94

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow;

Praise God, all creatures here below; Alleluia! Alleluia!

Praise God, the source of all our gifts!

Praise Jesus Christ, whose power uplifts!

Praise the Spirit, Holy Spirit! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

*Prayer of Dedication (in unison)

Gracious and generous God, we have much to be thankful for - our faith, our freedom to worship you, our families and friends. Help us never to take these for granted. Most of all, help us never to take for granted your great love, given to us in Jesus Christ and binding us together as his body. We pray that you will receive and bless these gifts as expressions of our gratitude
and love. Amen.

*Closing Hymn....................Tune: Nettleton

Sing a New Church

  1. Summoned by the God who made us

Rich in our diversity,

Gathered in the name of Jesus,

Richer still in unity.

Refrain: Let us bring the gifts that differ

And, in splendid, varied ways,

Sing a new Church into being,

One in faith and love and praise.

  1. Radiant risen from the water,

Robed in holiness and light,

Male and female in God’s image,

Male and female, God’s delight: Refrain.

  1. Trust the goodness of creation;

Trust the Spirit strong within.

Dare to dream the vision promised,

Sprung from seed of what has been. Refrain.

  1. Bring the hopes of ev-’ry nation;

Bring the art of ev-’ry race.

Weave a song of peace and justice;

Let it sound through time and space. Refrain.

  1. Draw together at one table

All the human family;

Shape a circle ever wider

And a people ever free. Refrain.

*Blessing and Benediction

*Postlude

*All who are able, please stand.

MEET OUR 2010 JAMAICAN MISSION TEAM

*CALL TO CELEBRATION

One:..........On this first day, which is holy,

we gather . . .

All:..........not alone, but as Christ's Body;
as ones who would suffer together,
we gather . . .

One:..........On this day of celebration,
we gather . . .

All:..........not in isolation, but in community;
as those who would care for one another,
we gather . . .

One:..........On this day of joy, not mourning,
we gather . . .

All:..........not with empty hands, or emptier hearts;
but as those baptized in grace's tears,
we gather . . .

THE PEOPLE OF GOD PRAYING

If you have a prayer joy or concern you would like shared during the Prayer of the People, please hand it to an usher during the Prayer Hymn.

PRAYER HYMN....................#2193

Lord, Listen to Your Children Praying” Sing Twice

A TEACHING PRAYER (In unison)

Was Puccini’s music for his ears alone?
Or was Starry Night only for Van Gogh’s eyes?

Are discerners of spirits
better than those who prophesy?
Is it better to be a healer than a preacher?
Was Mother Teresa more important
than the beggar she helped on the street?
Is red better than blue?

All gifts
are from the same Spirit.
They are each a part of the whole
and given to each of us also for each other,
and for the common good.

Lord, let us be taught. Amen.

The West Michigan Conference has had a long and deep relationship with the people of the Methodist Church of Haiti. Mission Teams that routinely travel to Haiti and have focused water projects, the Haiti Hot Lunch Program, Grace Children’s Hospital, helping build multiple schools & church buildings, centering around relationships and shared hope through Jesus Christ. The flood of images coming out of the devastating earthquake evokes such a deep emotional response from us that words are inadequate at this time. The magnitude of the devastation has altered the landscape of how we can respond for the immediate moment & near future. Presently, persons are asked not to travel to Haiti or ship anything to the site. But, we can help in the following ways: pray & pray more; give sacrificially through UMCOR & prepare Health Kits for quick distribution. We will receive an offering for the next few Sundays & invite you to prepare a kit(s). Instructions for Health Kits for Haiti are located on the table in the narthex. Please follow them precisely. Thanks for your caring!!

If you were expecting to receive offering envelopes for 2010, and haven’t, please contact our Financial Secretary, Dan Kinney or the church office at 775-5362.

On Sunday mornings during worship, we have a variety of options for our children. At the 8:30 worship, staffed child care is available for infants through 3 & 4 year olds. During the 11:00 worship, there is a staffed nursery for young children through 3 & 4 year olds. Following the Time With the Children, there is Sermontime - a time of learning for those in kindergarten through second grade held in our 1st & 2nd grade classroom. Children 3 and 4 years old may go to the nursery during Sermontime.
